Hello racers and race fans! We started off our 2009 season very well indeed!! I have promised to do a blog after every race and I plan on having some fun with this as you will see below. As promised John will be posting points shortly..
The seasons opening race held at the Sanford airport turned out to be a great day for all! We had at least 1,000 spectators throughout the day and 89 racers. The crowd seemed to really enjoy the show. I am sure that Camp Waban was pleased by the turnout as well.
As with every opening day, you could look through the pits and see all of the veterans getting their rigs in line, stopping and chatting with old friends they may not have seen since last season and of course motor homes and trailers. Ahh and the the smell of racing fuel fumes.. nothing quite like it.. after a long winter...
Meme, Susan and Amy stepped up as they had their usual kinks to work out in the make shift tower of John’s motor home and did anyone notice that when Robbie Hilton was the starter that when he stood behind that metal barrel you could barely see the top of his head.. LOL what a trooper he is though..
One of the things I noticed throughout the day, was all of the spectators looking at the ATV’s and trucks. Having been part of the races for so long I forgot about what it is like the first time you walk by an ATV like Larry Dagan’s or Josh Gochie's or a dragster like Dennis’s or Mike York’s ..Speaking of that, Mike’s rig got a lot of attention by everyone. A lot of them walked up to it, stared and it, and just could not figure out what was covered up on the back of his rig. You could families walking around amazed at what they saw... There were quite a few new trucks in both the street and top class. I particularly liked the black ones.. very nice looking..
We had a great turnout of ATV’s on Sunday as well, with the trail and top classes together numbering 45 and the juniors at a total of 15. I talked with a father and his son from Acton who was racing for the first time. Scott, the father, raced his truck in the 4 x 4 street class while his son was in the junior class. His son’s name was Collin and he told me he was 5 years old and having a good time. Collin had a red and white riding suit and helmet on and black boots to match his outfit and he looked so cute! Scott told me that his truck he ran a 6.7 ET at 50 mph and he seemed pleased with that. We hope that the new racers come back and race with us again.
Of course all of the veteran racers were rooting for anyone that could take out the Aggravator… Each time he gets up to the line everyone holds their breath and thinks, will this be the time we will not have to listen to him at the end of the track burping his throttle! Tiny almost had him the first race but Robbie had him by a nose. Robbie, being points champion of the 4 x 4 street class, told me he was running a 5.9 ET at 56 mph on the Sanford track. And to boot Robbie got beat by a girl!!! J Unfortunately I had to leave to go home and take care of my new puppy, but boy I wish I could have seen that. I can only imagine what his co-racers were saying about it! I bet there was some razzing going on..
Mike York told me that he ran a 4.125 ET at 80 mph his first pass. He has added a change to his motor which will take 10% more nitros oxide because he says he wants to go faster. His goal this year is to turn a 3.9. Knowing Mike he just might do it. Kim York, last years points champion in the ATV trail class, turned her same ET and mph from last year, being a 7..99 at 38 mph. Kim was tough to beat last year because she is so consistent. Her sights are set on this year and another jacket to hang in her closet.
I asked Mad Jack if he wanted to make a statement for the blog and his reply was I want a sponsor….wha wha wha…so Mad Jack wants a sponsor… and he is putting in his request..
We all missed the Larry and Bonnie Sunday and hope to see them at the next race.
Talking with Moe Ouellette he wanted everyone to know that “Racers have big hearts and when people need help we step up to help those who need it, like Camp Waban ”. He was very pleased with the turnout Sunday and so was John Lampros. John was excited that there were so many racers for the event. He hopes they all come back and race with us again.
I have to tell you that I received an email from “a little birdie” this morning and the email wanted me to check out an article that had recently been printed for a newspaper. It was an interesting article especially where it talks about Mark Jones’s car that he drives… You must click on the link and check this out. I can’t believe Mark Jones would talk about a Chevy like that…J)
